Rabbi’s Daughter
If you are the Rabbi’s daughter,
The hallways will part for you
Like the Red Sea.
But you will want to swim with
The other fish,
In the school of their secular thought.
If you are the Rabbis daughter,
your mothers eyes are always over
your shoulder,
they follow you to the soccer field
where you and your little brother
buried the toy cat he took
from his friends house,
muttering the commandment
to not steal under your breath.
If you are the Rabbis daughter,
boys will be scared of your
Love notes and bags of candy,
they are afraid your father will
smack their head with a Chumash,
And yell them back to
wandering in the Desert.
If you are the Rabbis daughter,
you will read forbidden
books hungrily,
And Hide them
under your covers,
because how could
you read any book other than
The eternal one your
Father serves you
For lunch and dinner?
